A Best CCW Training
Frequently Asked Questions
I have a gift certificate or voucher for a training class from Best Handgun Training. Will you
honor this certificate?
Absolutely. Any (valid, unexpired) gift certificate issued for or
from Best Handgun Training will be honored with Best CCW Training.
What is the difference between the 8 hour CCW course and the 16 hour CCW course?
Renewals require 8 hours of CCW training, and initail CCW training requires 16 hours
of CCW training. As an example, the State of California now requires the following counties to require 16
hours of CCW training and qualifications to obtain a permit: Sacramento, San Joaquin and Yolo counties all
require 16 hours of training, in which you will be in classroom on both days, and shooting on both days as well.
The 8 hour CCW training is for CCW renewal courses in California.
How large are the Basic (Beginner) handgun training classes?
The Instructor prefers smaller sized classes, to guarantee each student the opportunity of personal
one-on-one instruction during live-fire exercises. In the classroom lessons, our Instructors routinely alternate
teaching the different stages of gun safety lessons. On average, the Instructor directly teaches no more
than 6 students on the firing line, for basic courses.
Does the Basic Handgun discount work for CCW training?
NO. The Basic Handgun training is not for CCW training.
What will prohibit me from attending a class with you?
Criminal history such as Felony convictions, domestic violence convictions, current restraining
orders, history of mental illness, any kind of illegal activity, being under the influence of alcohol or drugs
(prescribed or not) just prior to the class, or during the class. You should have no alcoholic drinks for a period
of at least 12 hours prior to attending our course. While sleeping, your body "burns off" approximately .02 percent
blood alcohol content per hour, on average although there can be many varying factors. For instance, if you have a
12 pack of beer, weigh 140 pounds, your blood alcohol concentration may exceed .24 (legally drunk times three). In
this case, If you sleep 8 hours, you will still be under the influence when you wake up. You should have no
prescription medications in your system (ie.... pain relievers, xanax, etc.. if there is a warning label regarding
operating heavy machinery or equipment). The bottom line is.... If you have any amount of drugs or alcohol in your
system, or you can get a DUI from it, do not attend our class, or you will be immediately dismissed, and possibly
rescheduled at a later date. Many cough syrups and allergy medications can have the same effect. Heed the warnings
on the labels. It is imperative that all students are alert and well oriented.
If you have a question as to whether you have a disqualifying factor, you can email or call us. Any
person with a felony conviction (or on parole, or a probation stipulation with no access to firearms) attending our
class would be subject to another crime (usually a felony), just being around the firearms.
Do you offer training courses for AR style rifles?
No, at this time we do not offer this type of training course for the AR platform.
Must I pre-pay for your Basic Handgun Course, to receive the current special
offered?
No.
How do I sign up for a course which I have already paid for?
To register for a course, first check out the details of the particular course in which you wish to register (to the left of this page, on
the main menu). Class schedules are generally posted 3-4
weeks in advance. If you have already paid for the course, or have a voucher, gift certificate or pre-paid card,
and the class does not specify that the class is full, simply sign up online. The range fee is $20, payable in
cash on the day of the class.
Is the range located indoors or outdoors?
At this time all of our range work is outdoors, we DO NOT offer Indoor range classes.
Will I receive a certificate after the CCW training course?
Yes, all CCW courses are certified. But, not to be confused with the FSC certification (see below).
This training course does not authorize you to purchase a gun, nor does it waive the FSC certification
requirements.
What is the best way to contact Best CCW Training with further questions?
The BEST way to reach us is via email. With the nature of our business, we dont have a telephone
ringer on during a classroom or range instruction. We do not answer calls during a classroom instruction, or while
we are at the range. I work very long hours, and find it easier to email (often late at night) rather than call.
However, if you must call us, leave a message and I will return your call when possible. Our telephone
number is a landline and does not receive text messages.
Do I need to bring anything with me for a Basic Handgun/Pistol course?
No, it is not necessary to bring anything with you, as all materials, 22 rim-fire gun rental,
ammunition (22 rim fire), targets, hearing and eye protection, are included in the cost of the course. However, be
sure to wear comfortable and appropriate clothing for the flying brass at the range (and the temperature at the
range is usually pretty cool in the winter, and hot during the summer). Dress for the weather elements. Bring a
ball cap if you like (it is suggested). Avoid wearing shorts or low cut shirts. If you are bringing a gun, be sure
to bring a box of ammunition (50 rounds) for that particular gun.
Are there breaks and lunch breaks?
During the classroom instruction, there is a 5 minute break about every hour. Lunch breaks are
usually 30 minutes long, and there are restaurants and fast food very close to the training facilities. Meals
are not included with the training course.
I do not have a Firearms Safety Certificate (FSC). Is it required to have one before
class?
In 2015, the Handgun Safety Certificate (HSC) was renamed to Firearms Safety Certificate (FSC).
HSC's/FSC's are not required to take this course. In the State of CA, it is a requirement to take a short written
test (HSC) to purchase or transfer a firearm into your name (certain
exemptions, such as CCW permit holders). You can take this test for $25.00 at any firearms dealer, on the day that
you decide to purchase your pistol, rifle or shotgun. It is only necessary to take an FSC test once every five
years. The FSC is good to purchase any type of firearm in CA. If you lose your FSC, you can obtain a replacement
from the Certified DOJ instructor where you originally took your test, for a replacement fee. On average, most
students are able to take and pass this test under five minutes after completing a course (such as Basic
Handgun/Pistol) with Best CCW Training. Your Instructors are Certified through the CA Department of Justice, but we
DO NOT offer test for FSC. We have posted the HSC Study
Guide on our website for your convenience.
Do you offer the FSC test?
No, we do not offer the FSC test. You can take the test at any gun store.
Can I sign up for a Private Lesson?
We do not offer private lessons at this time, but our team of instructors
offer private lessons at their locations. However, with the basic handgun training (beginner training) the range
work is one on one until the instructor feels comfortable with your safety, skills and knowledge.
What is the minimum age requirement?
For the Basic Pistol/Shotgun/Rifle courses, the minimum age to attend the classroom and shooting
portion is 18 years of age, provided that the student is mature and responsible, (commonly varies with the
individual), has the required positive attitude when handling firearms, and is able to follow along with the
lessons and course materials. The student must successfully demonstrate the knowledge which they have gained with
safe gun handling skills, before moving on to the next stages of lessons.
For courses which do not contain "live-fire" shooting exercises, the minimum age requirement to attend a gun
training class with us is at least 18 years of age.
CCW courses with Best CCW Training require that the applicant be 21 years of age (for most
counties), or will be 21 years of age within 30 days of course completion.
How do I enroll in a course?
The easiest way to enroll is to schedule at the link to the
left. Be sure to include your telephone number, and the best time to call. We will follow-up with you, via an
instant computer generated email confirmation, after you enter your information. If you do not receive the email
confirmation within a few minutes, it is possible that you have not entered your email correctly. If this is the
case, you will not receive a confirmation, and your course may not be scheduled.
How much does it cost for a course?
Please click on the appropriate link to the left (on the main
menu). The course dues, requirements or pre-requisites will be on that web page. Please email or call with any
further questions.
What days and times are courses offered?
We generally offer different courses throughout the week, typically 2-3 days per week. The schedule
is posted at the link to the left. Once a course is booked full, the date disappears from the calendar. The
online calendar is generally posted on or about the 15th of each month (for the
following month). You will not see dates far in advance. If you are looking for a date in the
future, please check back within 30-45 days of your anticipated time frame.
Can I bring my own firearm to the course?
In CCW classes, it is required for you to bring your own firearm and ammunition. However, in
the Basic Handgun course we will supply a loaner 22 with ammunition if you do not bring a firearm. You are not
allowed to bring a firearm or ammunition in to the classroom with you. Please read the pdf document, and abide by these directions. In all cases, there is absolutely
no firearms or ammunition allowed in the classroom. If you bring a firearm or ammunition, you must
leave the firearm in your vehicle until instructed to bring it in. Be sure to transport your firearm in accordance
to CA state law (locked in a secure case, with no ammunition in the gun). Email or call with any questions. Please
read the instructions by clicking here for the course which you plan
to attend.
Can I make modifications to a gun that is (or will be) on a CA CCW Permit?
For some counties, this is grounds for immediate revocation of a CCW permit. In other counties,
most Sheriff's will inform you that it is just not a good idea to make a modification to a weapon. For any self
defense shooting, there will always be a criminal investigation, and almost always a civil litigation. This is
covered in our classroom, but feel free to inquire with your issuing authority (Sheriff) during the process.
How do I know if the gun is registered to me?
If you purchased (or transferred) a handgun through an FFL (gun dealer), the gun is registered to
you at the time of transfer. If you purchased the handgun in CA through a private party transfer prior to the year
1991, and an FFL was not utilized, the gun may not be registered to you. If you are unsure, you can request a CA
DOJ request (AFS) to obtain registered firearms records (for guns registered in your name only, and not the history
of a gun). This form is available by clicking on this link.
I moved to CA from another state, or I have obtained a firearm from a family member, or have
inherited it. What is the legal requirements?
Click on this link for
getting the firearm registered to you if you have moved into CA. Be sure to read all sections completely, and
adhere to the guidelines. Obtaining a firearm illegally will be a felony.
Click on this link for a family
transfer. However, family transfers (excluding an FFL) can only be between the following: Parent to child (and
visa-versa), Grandparent to Grandchild (and visa-versa), Spouse to Spouse. You are not eligible
for a family transfer (although they must go through an
FFL) for the following transfers: Siblings, Aunts, Uncles, Nephews, Nieces, etc.... or other family
members. This is covered in our Basic class. ALL of these other transfers must go through an FFL.
Should I take my CCW training prior to my interview with the Sheriff's Department?
Please check your sheriff's department policies and procedures. This is your sole responsibility,
and training fees will not be reimbursed if you are denied a permit. It may be recommended that you take your CCW
training course prior to the CCW interview. We coach you through the entire process, and have you well prepared for
the interview. However, as of 01/01/2013, it is no longer a requirement that the training MUST be completed prior
to the interview.
If you have any concerns about potential
disqualifiers (background issues), you should have your interview prior to the CCW training course. The
CCW training course is a non-refundable course.
If you have any questions about background issues, please contact your sheriff depatment directly.
You should check the scheduling availability with your County Sheriff Department (the county which you reside in).
Typically you can "Google" the following phrase to be directed to their website for CCW: (XXXXXXXXX) County Sheriff
CCW permit.
How long is my CCW training certificate valid for?
Several counties that we instruct for are booked very far in advance, due to the recent requests
for CCW's. If your county is booked 6 months to a year for an initial interview, they will honor the training
certificate for up to 60 days in most cases.
Can I obtain a CA CCW if I am a non-resident of CA?
Simply put, NO. You must be a resident of CA to obtain a CCW, and you must apply to the County
Sheriff (of the county which you reside in).
If I receive a CCW permit from my County Sheriff, is it valid in other counties in CA?
Yes. Typically (barring any other restrictions), your CA CCW permit is valid in all of CA's 58
counties. Your restrictions from your issuing authority will apply statewide.
I have a non-resident CCW/CFP/CHP from another state. Is it valid in CA?
Not yet. But that could be subject to change with the new national administration coming in. CA
does not honor ANY permit from any other state or jurisdiction outside of CA. There are No exceptions to
this law.
If I take your CA CCW class, can I apply for and obtain a non-resident permit for other
states?
Yes. Reciprocity is covered in the CCW class, and all of your
questions will be answered. Additional certification and application fees will be required.
How do I make an appointment to qualify with a new gun for my CCW (modification)?
Visit our online scheduling calendar, and book your appointment from there. Check your County Sheriff
website, to make a CCW modification, to determine how far booked in advance they are. NOTE - Sacramento County
Sheriff is not currently allowing permit modifications (except before final issuance, and also upon renewal),
and all weapons must be qualified with at the range.
How many rounds of ammunition should I bring?
Bring at least 50 rounds of ammunition per weapon (we recommend at least 100 rounds per
weapon).
What are the CCW qualifications like?
If you have plenty of experience behind your gun, you should not have a problem qualifying with
your gun(s). I recommend having experience, with at least 500 rounds with the weapon(s) prior to
enrolling in a CCW class (or day 2 of 2). An easy way to phrase it is: If you can hit an 8" paper plate from 10
yards away, you will have no problems, if you are safe with your gun, and keep the gun pointed down range at all
times. This includes being able to manipulate the gun (lock the slide open on a semi-automatic, with no magazine
present) while controlling the muzzle of the gun pointed in a safe direction (down range) at all times. Safety is a
top priority for us, and if you will be incorporating a gun into your daily life, you must have plenty of
practice with the rules of gun safety. Save yourself potential frustration and/or embarassment, and know
your gun before signing up for any CCW qualification course.
How can I get more information regarding CCW permit requirements and the application process?
Visit the Training Information link by clicking here. And
check out your County Sheriff's Department website for CCW permit process and appointments.
How easy (or how difficult) is it to obtain a CCW permit?
In the counties which we instruct for (click here) it is
rather easy. We walk you through the process, answering all of your questions, while preparing and assisting you
through the entire process, from start to finish. Of course, there can be dis-qualifiers, such as criminal history, and "bad" driving records or other
issues. The biggest challenge (in some, but "few" counties) is the waiting period to get your interview with the
Sheriff's Department, due to the recent demand. Schedule your appointment with them ASAP, as you can always
reschedule or cancel, if needed. Research the specific county requirements, and determine their issuance policies.
Use the internet search engines.
Can pregnant women or nursing mothers attend a course?
We are not a doctor, and will not provide medical advice. Pregnant women
must discuss their participation in firearms courses with their
physicians prior to taking the course. You should discuss the effects
of loud sounds and airborne lead particulate. If any students are pregnant or nursing an infant, they should
not handle any chemicals, lubricants or solvents unless they have discussed doing so with their
physician.
What kind of participation is involved in a typical Basic Handgun shooting course?
Students must demonstrate safe gun handling skills with training pistols, prior to participating in live-fire
exercises. Students will be required to participate in group discussions
regarding safety and fundamentals.
Am I able to take a course if I have a physical limitation or
disability?
Some students will not be able to assume certain shooting
positions (such as standing, kneeling or squatting shooting positions) because of physical limitations or
disabilities. The presence of a physical limitation or disability does not by itself affect a student’s eligibility
to attend the course or receive a certificate of completion. Most exercises may be adapted to work within each
student’s range of motion/function. Regardless of the disability, all
students must demonstrate safety, the necessary knowledge, skills, attitude and understanding of the laws of
the State pertaining to firearms use to receive a certificate of
completion. Also, safety will not be compromised in any modified technique. It is important to notify the Instructor, prior to enrolling in a course, if you have
any concerns which may need to be addressed. This may include (but is not
limited to) sore or bad knees, ankles, wrists, elbows, hips, artificial joints, deformities, or anything which may
hinder or alter your abilities to perform certain shooting tasks in a safe manner, or the ability to perform safety
demonstrations. This course is offered to persons in accordance and compliance with the Americans with Disabilities
Act, but due to the nature of the overall safety of all surrounding students and instructors, as well as the
general public, and compliance of the courses, each case will be evaluated on an individual
basis.
